How to use in Therapy

End the Silence is one of two modules that center the importance of relational history and how survivors’ stories are often restricted. Being heard and validated is an essential part of building the therapeutic relationship. These materials also continue the process of reconnecting survivors with themselves.

Survivors’ perceptions of themselves are often shaped by what abusers say about them, along with the blame and shame they absorb. End the Silence materials guide survivors in recognizing that they are not what happened to them and not what abusers say about them, using a step-by-step process.

Recognizing and Building Resilience assists therapists in helping survivors identify their strengths, such as seeking support from family or engaging in therapy. This process helps reduce self-blame for what happened and how they responded.

How Trauma Affects You uses an adaptation of Amnesty International’s “Chart of Coercion” to identify methods of coercive control, along with their purpose and impact. Survivors’ responses to the handout support deeper understanding of how they have been affected and how they have responded.

The Coercive Control Checklist identifies twelve methods of coercive control, named for their impact on survivors. Therapists may find this especially useful for clients who question whether their partner’s behavior is abusive, as well as for those who identify abuse early in therapy. Seeing specific examples helps validate and solidify survivors’ perceptions. The checklist also deepens understanding of why they feel and respond as they do, often leading to discussion of what they want to change—both in the relationship and within themselves.

Safety Suggestions provides ideas survivors can use to personalize the Safety Planning handout for their own needs. These materials emphasize both emotional and physical safety.

Own Your Story brings together survivors’ insights to support restructuring their stories to include new understanding. Using what resonates with them, survivors build self-awareness and develop a stronger sense of self-appreciation.

End the Silence materials support survivors in reclaiming who they are while strengthening validation, clarity, and self-understanding.
