How to Use in Therapy
Mind Mastery includes six cognitive tools that strengthen psychological functioning. These materials help survivors address the psychological impact of abusive relationships and build resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
Domineering tactics such as denial, blame, threats, gaslighting, and physical harm shape survivors’ perceptions and responses. Over time, the resulting sense of helplessness can lead to beliefs and thoughts that further limit agency. Mind Mastery interventions work to disrupt these abuser-instilled perceptions and beliefs, supporting survivors in regaining the clarity and strength to shape their own lives.
Self-Esteem adds to discussions of how socialization contributes to both low and healthy self-esteem. It addresses the impact of self-talk on confidence and on what individuals allow themselves to want and pursue. Therapists may find this useful in introducing self-esteem–promoting behaviors and affirmations.
Thought Empowerment introduces how thoughts influence emotions and behavior. Defining common irrational beliefs, self-defeating thoughts, and self-enhancing thoughts provides a foundation for therapists to guide survivors in shifting patterns that no longer serve them.
Thought Log is an exercise that supports awareness of both self-enhancing and self-defeating thoughts. This often deepens therapy discussions about what survivors want to change and how they want to think about themselves and their situations.
Perceptions and Perspective guides survivors in becoming aware of their thoughts as well as the statements of others, evaluating available evidence, and avoiding jumping to conclusions. Therapists may use this to strengthen survivors’ ability to assess what they perceive and what is communicated to them—capacities that may not have been developed or may have been undermined in an abusive relationship.
Coping Thoughts builds on Self-Esteem and Thought Empowerment. It introduces four types of thoughts that bolster resilience in difficult interactions. These strategies also support emotional regulation and serve as a bridge to improving assertiveness. Assertiveness skills are addressed in the Find Your Voice module.
Mind Mastery materials support survivors in recognizing and reshaping thought patterns that limit their sense of self and options, strengthening clarity, resilience, and intentional decision-making.
